The Cadillac team, which is scheduled to make its Formula 1 debut next year, has compiled a list of at least six potential drivers and will make their selection based on merit, as stated by principal Graeme Lowdon on Monday. The team, supported by General Motors, received final approval last week to join as the sport's 11th team on the starting grid, paving the way for discussions about the future line-up.
Experienced F1 drivers who currently lack seats but could be considered include Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Pérez, and Mick Schumacher, with American IndyCar star Colton Herta also frequently mentioned.
"The obvious question is whether we'll have American drivers and personally I see no reason why an American driver can't be selected on merit," Lowdon told reporters on a video call. "The overriding objective is merit."
In the near future, the American company will use Ferrari engines, but General Motors, the parent company of Cadillac, has pledged to develop its own engines from a U.S. headquarters by the end of the decade.
